If you know me, you know I’m a big fan of cheesy dad gags. And one of my favorites is the classic “polar bear in a snowstorm” joke. Honestly, it’s one of the most underrated jokes out there, if I do say so myself.
How to Draw the “Polar Bear in a Snowstorm” Joke
If you’re not familiar with it, here’s the gist:
- You tell someone (your spouse if you want the best reaction) that you know how to draw a polar bear in a snowstorm.
- Their initial response (if they’re not familiar with the joke already) is usually, “Oh wow, I didn’t know you could draw!” (unless you can draw, in which case your joke might have less of an impact)
- You reply, “Well here, let me show you”. You grab a white sheet of paper and either a pencil or a black pen.
- You then draw two dots for eyes and then a nose shape in between but a tad lower.
- You put the pen or pencil down.
- You wait for your spouse to realize what’s happening, and their face slowly turns to look at you, and they say something along the lines of “Why did I marry you?”
- You both laugh (or you laugh enough for the both of you), and you sleep on the couch later that night.
Get it? Because polar bears are white… and so is snow… so the only thing you can see is their eyes and nose?… get it?… If you’re a dad (even if only in spirit), I’m sure you’re laughing hysterically by now.
Materials Used
This is probably the easiest drawing you’ll ever make, and you can do it with almost any dark or black drawing utensil. The most crucial part is that your medium MUST be white paper. That’s part of the gag. So,
- Any dark drawing utensil
- A black pen or any pencil variety. I used a Sakura Micron Pen (these things are the best).
- A white sheet of paper
- As stated above, the paper has to be white or the gag won’t make sense. I was using the Pro Art 9×12 Sketchbook.
That’s it. Really.
Polar Bear in a Snowstorm Drawing Video
I know I described it above, but I actually have a video to help you out if you’re so hesitant about drawing that you’re still convinced you’ll mess it up.
In my video, I honestly add even more detail than necessary, but if you want to go “all out” you can do it the way I show here.
That’s all, folks! I’ll be here all week! If you were actually hoping to learn how to draw, I also wrote an article pointing out some of the best free websites for learning to draw.
