A watercolor hedgehog being painted with an Aquash water prush

If you’re an artist, the small Pentel Aquash Water Brush, with its fine-point tip, may just be the next tool to try. Like any tool, it has downsides, but in my opinion, they are negligible compared to its benefits.

I’ve used it to paint a cute hedgehog on my YouTube channel, which you’ll see below, and it worked perfectly! (If I do say so myself).

The Pentel Aquash Water Brush is a popular, innovative tool for artists at any skill level and it’s designed to make a painting with watercolors and other water-based media more convenient. Unlike traditional brushes, the Aquash Water Brush has a built-in water reservoir, eliminating the need for a separate water container. This allows for more freedom and flexibility when painting, whether working in a studio or on the go.

In this detailed review, we will take a closer look at the features and benefits of the Pentel Aquash Water Brush, as well as its suitability for different types of art media and techniques.

Easy & Portable

Who doesn’t love a good lazy day? Well, the Pentel Aquash water brush is here to make your painting experience as relaxed as you are. With no plunger to fill and no squeezing required, it’s like having a personal butler for your brush. The opening is perfect for making filling fast and easy, and the water barrel makes it easy to transition between colors. Just squeeze it and swish it on a wiping paper or paper towel. Voila! The previous paint disappears, and you’re ready to use a new color with your Pentel Arts Water Brush!

Not only is it easy to use, but it’s also a portable dream. You can take it anywhere to paint without worrying about an additional container for water, which makes painting on the go a breeze. With a typical painting setup, you’d need to lug around a container of water, but the Pentel Aquash Water Brush holds it safely in the palm of your hand as you paint. This allows for much more freedom and flexibility as a painter, so you’re not confined to a studio or a desk.

Personally, I don’t see how standard brushes can even compete in the “Ease of Use / Portability” category. The fact that I don’t have to keep dipping a brush is my top selling point.

Design

The “Design” section of our article is all about the physical features of the Pentel Aquash Water Brush, but let’s be real, it’s not just about the functionality, it’s also about the aesthetics, right? So let’s dive in!

First off, the brush has a flat plastic barrel that is comfortable to hold and won’t roll off your work table like a clumsy ballerina. So you can paint in peace without worrying about your brush going for an unexpected solo performance.

The tip of the brush is also noteworthy, it’s springy and flexible, which makes it perfect for calligraphic designs and other fancy lettering you might want to do on your envelopes and cards. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good fancy lettering? The tip is made of durable synthetic fibers that can withstand the rigors of painting, which is great because we all know painting can be a wild ride. But, fair warning, it will become permanently stained with paint after the first use, but hey, it’s like getting a tattoo. It just makes it more personal!

And let’s not forget the built-in water reservoir, it eliminates the need for a separate container of water, meaning you can paint anywhere, anytime, like a true nomadic artist! The reservoir is easy to fill, and the water flow is consistent, making it easy to obtain an even gradient when blending with gouache paints, which is very difficult with other types of brushes.

In summary, the design of the Pentel Aquash Water Brush is not just practical. It’s also stylish and fun. So give it a try and let your inner artist shine.

Suitable Uses

If you do a lot of gouaches, the Aquash is the perfect brush; the consistent water flow makes it easier to obtain an even gradient when blending with gouache paints, which is very difficult with other brushes. This brush is just perfect for any water-based art media. It also performs excellently with calligraphic designs; the flexible tips make it easy to create nice lettering on envelopes and cards.

If you’d like to experiment, you can easily fill the Aquash with alcohol to use as marker blenders. It has been tested with isopropyl and denatured alcohol without any damage to the brush being observed. This further confirms its durability; it can withstand a substance other than normal paint.

Unsuitable Uses

Like similar brushes, the Aquash is unsuitable for waterproof and pigment-based inks. Waterproof ink will choke the brush, and with pigment-based ink, the pigment particles will slowly collect on the narrow parts of the brush. However, I consider this to be a minor flaw.

Using the Pentel Aquash Water Brush

I use this water brush to paint a hedgehog in watercolor only on my YouTube channel. It turned out great, in my opinion! Overall, I love it. It makes watercolor painting a little simpler.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Pentel Aquash Water Brush is an amazing tool for artists of all skill levels. Its unique design and features make it easy to use and portable, allowing for more freedom and flexibility when painting. Whether you’re working in a studio or on the go, the brush’s built-in water reservoir and fine-point tip make it perfect for any water-based art media. From gouache to calligraphic designs, the consistent water flow makes it easy to obtain an even gradient when blending and creating nice lettering.

The small Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush is an amazing product, highly recommended for all kinds of water-based art media. Try it out, and take your water coloring to the next level.
